"And then she said - "But what about if I'm" - ZOMG, wait for it..."RAPED"?!? IKR?
Tell me how you feel about the following three statements:
RAPE IS WRONG. RAPE IS EVIL. RAPE IS DESPICABLE.
If you don't agree with this, feel free to fuck off somewhere else, because if we *can't* agree on it, then we have nothing else to find middle ground on. That rape is evil is one of my core beliefs, as are equal rights, equal pay, and equal healthcare.
Republicans - particularly religious ones - think otherwise, and have expressed their overall disdain for women in general, and believe that rape is either a punishment or a gift from God...depending on who you talk to.
“Rape is kinda like the weather. If it’s inevitable, relax and enjoy it.”
Clayton Williams, the Republican nominee for Texas in 1990
“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that thing down.”
Republican Representative Todd Akin of Missouri, August 19, 2012
“Rape victims should make the best of a bad situation.” - “Rape is a GIFT of human life.”
Rick Santorum, former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination on January 20, 2012
"I came to realize life is that gift from God." - "Rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”
Republican Richard Mourdock, 53rd Treasurer of Indiana
And my all-time favorite:
“If a woman has (the right to an abortion), why shouldn’t a man be free to use his superior strength to force himself on a woman? At least the rapist’s pursuit of sexual freedom doesn’t (in most cases) result in anyone’s death.”
Lawrence Lockman, Republican member of the Maine House of Representatives
***************************************************************
The religious, of course, will use any excuse to combat abortion, and there's nothing a Republican likes more than to garner support through religion while shitting on whatever female rights might exist in the process. In the case of Donal Trump, it's (as the man himself would say) a win-win!
Prior to the passage of Obamacare, survivors of sexual assault who sought medical attention for injuries sustained during the assault could be denied coverage later on because rape was considered a pre-existing condition.
Stop.
Just for a moment, here; Stop.
Think about that.
Rape, before Obamacare, was a PRE-EXISTING CONDITION.
Meaning you could be - and in many cases, WERE - turned away if you had no coverage after being sexually assaulted. This includes children, just so you understand the full implications here. I know of some of these cases personally.
So, today, the Republican Party decided to take another ginormous leap backwards into the very Dark Ages we keep threatening to bomb other countries to..."Trumpcare" - the new GOP health-care-reform bill - will allow states to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, including rape and sexual assault.
The
Republicans - those who now control of all three branches of government, and the best
they could do was reinstate the worst parts of the HMO days (remember
those?) along with repealing the ACA instead of FIXING everything that
was wrong with it. Pre Existing conditions are back on the table.
Exorbitant fines and fees for no coverage (something I publicly
denounced the ACA for as well, just so we're clear).
And rape just became a pre-existing condition.
The MacArthur-Meadows Amendment in Trumpcare allows any state in the Union to waive the ban on denying coverage for pre-existing
conditions. It also allows states to waive preventative health services
like vaccinations, mammograms and gynecological screenings. For those
who survive a sexual assault, care can often be needed from the physical
trauma as well as mental. Survivors can contract sexually transmitted
infections and women can be impregnated, and God is in his heaven, smiling at it all.
If I needed any more proof that Republicans
don't give two shits about this country, the poor, the disastrous effect
of outsourcing, the environment...oh hell, ANYTHING that doesn't pocket
them a few dollars, plus whatever you've got in the safe...this would be it. Mind you, I didn't...but if I did, they just gave it to me.
From an overwhelming disdain for science to back-walking "fundamental beliefs", such as John McCain's 180 reversal on homosexuality (when it affected him, of course), the overall message is always the same; WE DON'T FUCKING CARE
Every woman who voted for Trump - how do you feel? Good? Do you think this is a step forward for you? Do you feel represented by the man who, if he wasn't rich, would at this moment be serving serious time for child rape?
Any Trumpets who are husbands or fathers with daughters out there? You okay with this? Are you HAPPY with this? Is this what you wanted?
Oh yes - I've seen all the anti-Liberal, Oh-look-at-the-leftie-snowflakes, "dodged a bullet with Hillary" rhetoric on heavy repeat for the last six months now...And I've been wondering where it was going.
I don't even know what to think anymore, and I saw this was coming last year.
I want to say that, maybe we'll learn from this, but you know what? People actually VOTED for Trump - knowing this was in store. They rejoiced that the uppity negro was finally out of office, and now with full Republican control over the government, we can finally drain the swamp! At a time when our country is more divided than ever, this is just another step in the wrong direction. So no, I don't believe in the slightest that we'll "learn" anything from this.
We are, literally, THAT FUCKING STUPID.
To everyone who voted Trump into office: May this bill affect you as much as it does me, and the others who desperately need health coverage. I look forward to seeing you in the ER someday, that same look of disbelief on your face that so many have worn before you. Wondering how your "God" could have allowed this to happen (kinda the ultimate "not my responsibility" card, eh?) or if your child/wife/friend will pull through her psychological trauma long after the physical scars heal.
Maybe then, we'll actually be able to have some sort of dialogue.
On equal footing.
Until then - may you live in interesting times.
